Small arms have always been an integeral part of military service. New service members learn to use them in their basic training. They hone their skills in both marksmanship exercises, and contests, as well as in combat. However, to date, no gun, however well constructed, ever lasts forever and when the weapon is no longer servicable it is sent to the Anniston Army Depot (ANAD) in Alabama, where it meets its demise in the jaws of "Captain Crunch." This machine is a massive industrial shredder that effortlessly tears the weapons into tiny bits. Captain Crunch began its operation in the mid 1990s and is charged with militarizing and disposing of all kinds of firearms. It is fully capable of shredding as many as 600 pistols and as many as 2,000 rifles in a single session, which might extend over a period of three to four days. Pistols are more difficult to completely destroy, because of their smaller parts, all of which must be rendered useless.
