Salvete Omnes!

In preparation of the upcoming Ludi Apollinares, I wanted to do a survey, from the people who are participating (and hopefully enjoying) the Ludi. I want to hear public opinion on what games you want in Ludi Apollinares and future Ludi! So please comment with any ideas or comments! I look forward to your responses!

NOTE: HISTORY LESSON IS SUPPOSED TO BE HISTORY CONTEST

These are the planned events so far, or suggestions. Please choose five out of these that you would like to see:

1. History Contest
2.Gladiatoria Munera League
3. Art Contest
4. Poetry Contest
5: Chess Contest
6: Chariot Races

I look forward to everyone's responses and bring you the best Ludi possible with our newly appointed Curule Aedile, Marcus Flavius Celsus!

Valete!

Something to consider for future Ludi games:

Backgammon

Modern Backgammon developed from the Byzantine Greek Tάβλη (tabula) game, which itself was descended from an earlier Roman game called Ludus Duodecim Scriptorum ("Game of twelve lines"). This game was preceded by Egyptian Senet and the Sumerian Royal Game of Ur. It is often theorized to have been an Ancient Persian game before that.

I think that modern Backgammon is an excellent choice for competition - both because of it's historical relevance, but also because it's ubiquity, uniformity, balanced difficulty, and accessibility to virtual and IRL platforms.

Brutus sal.

Personally, I like the idea floated previously by Horatius. He suggested the ludi factions be given points for victories. At the end of the year the most successful factions can then be awarded a prize. I think we should increase the incentives to join and compete within factions. Teams are useful for building camaraderie!

Curio Brutus Sal.

Yes, I agree with you on that! I was planning on messaging Horatius to get a detailed outline of this plan so we can look at implementing it in the very near future! :)

Note: I spoke in private with F. Gallius Eugenius regarding his backgammon idea. Just so as to clear up any confusion regarding my lack of response on the public thread. I encourage any more suggestions from our citizens. :)

Vale!

Master Lucius Aurelius Curio;

You have asked everyone to vote for their preferred games at their earliest convience. Since I am a newbie to this Res Publica, and I am not a big gamer, perhaps you would be so good as to provide a list of games that you have in your games roster that can be played on the internet. This list, I believe would make it much easier, at least to me, to make a decision about what is available, as well as to what is my favorite.

Respectfully Submitted;
Marcus Audens

Curio Audens Sal.

This is a good question, and one that I shall clear up for you. As of currently the only potential internet game we have the possibility of doing is perhaps an online chess tournament. Perhaps in the future we will have more options, but as of right now that stands as the only 'internet' game. The others would be mostly how the contests have been currently in the Ludi. I shall outline how each one shall work for those who are confused on them.

History Contest - This would be a contest where questions of a historical nature, or trivia questions based on history, would be asked. The most correct answers would wind up winning overall. I would most likely reach out to Quadratus for such a contest as he has run it before and is more knowledgeable on Roman history than myself by far.

Art Contest - This would be an art contest, as the name implies, based around the specific Ludi its representing. For instance, for the Ludi Apollinares it would be something based on Apollo or music or something along those lines. This contest would be run by our Tribune, Gaia Cassia Longina as the leader of Collegium Artium.

Poetry Contest - This contest would be as the name implies, a contest of poetry based around the Ludi we are currently in. This one is pretty much a shoe in for the next Ludi, Ludi Apollinares, as poetry is very representative of Apollo. This contest would be judged by the Aediles, both myself and Curule Aedile Marcus Flavius Celsus.

Chess Contest - This would be the only one with potential to be run as an internet game. As the name implies, it would basically be a tournament of chess where the person with the most wins throughout it would stand to be the winner.

Chariot Races - These would be virtual chariot races, most likely to be done by our honorable Consul Publius Iunius Brutus. He has the software and recording for it, that would allow everyone to watch them. If anyone else has such software, please let me know. More people who have this available the better our chances of being able to host them.

Gladiatoria Munera League - And the big one I am introducing these next Ludi is the Gladiatoria Munera League. The setup will be alot like Nova Roma's old setup they had. It was a tried and true method that worked very well. So I have been working on adapting it to our own uses. It will be a league, as stated above, that will take place every month from the beginning of it. Every citizen would be allowed to enter one fighter for free, any additional gladiator would cost 10 denarii, to be deposited into the Aedile Cohors budget. During the matches, it is my hope to have a wager system set up where you can bet on who you think will win, and this would be deposited into a Societas fund to be set up, that way no one person is holding onto those funds for sake of transparency. This would help boost our economy and use of denarii as a whole. the winner of each bet would receive their winnings after the conclusion of that match. At the end of the league, the winner would receive a prize (most likely a denarii award) for having the MVP, if you will.

I hope this cleared up any and all confusion people may have had.

Valete!

Salvete!

With regard to a prospective chess tournament: I directed a similar event last year in a NR ludus. It involved my playing simultaneously anyone interested with prizes awarded to those who obtained a draw or won. Only two took up the challenge and we played by sending the moves via email - which is a possible, but not good, way of doing it. The problem with that is there is no way to enforce a time control and it resulted in one of the games taking several hours. A better way would be for each person involved to play using a Facebook platform which would allow us to set a time limit (my favorite is for each player to have 20 minutes within which to complete all moves). I have had many years of experience directing tournaments for the U.S., New Jersey, and Quebec chess federations. Meanwhile, I would be happy to play anyone interested.

Valete!

Curio Quadratus Sal.

Gratias tibi ago, Quadratus, for that clarification. The Facebook platform could very well work when utilized through the messaging feature. :) In the future I may have to take you up on the offer of a chess match. I love chess (though not very skilled)!

Vale!
