Podcast on Roman History - Episode II Romulus' Reign (Earn Denarii!)

Postby Caeso Cispius Laevus » Thu Oct 13, 2016 7:27 am

Sal.

This is not a book. But I would like to share and discuss this podcast episode on Roman history. This episode speaks to the reign of Romulus, the founder of Rome, and his eventual disappearance.

The best comment on this episode, according to me, will be awarded 10 denarii!

The next episode will discuss the second king, Numa Pompulius and how this man is said to have established many of the religious traditions of Rome.

I look forward to our continued discussion on Romulus and the Roman monarchy!

What do you think my friends?

SALVE!

So here is a question I have. Do you think Romulus was a virtuous man? How do we explain Romulus in the context of Roman virtue and sense of self?

SALVETE!

No ideas? I do not think there are right or wrong answers. Was Romulus a moral man? Does it matter?

Sal.

I think we must judge the qualities of a man based on the standards of their time. By 21st century principles or by Christian principles, no Romulus is not a virtuous man. But based on archaic principles of 700 BCE Italy I think Romulus was righteous. He gathered up outcasts from around the land. He provided them a home. He provided for his community. He was a monarch that was not a tyrant to his people. He fought against his step-father who was unjust.

Romulus was a moral man by the old Italian standards of the age in which he lived.
