CIRCENSES: Race C

L. Livius prae. circ. omnibus in Circo sal.

The third of our qualifying races is dominated by the Whites who have locked down the front rank straight out of the gates. Though it's anyone's guess at this point how these chariots will fare in the long run ...

All chariots have twelve (12) hours to submit their desired action to the praepositus circensis as they move into the second leg of this lap. Those who do not meet this deadline will be considered to have chosen "Steady."

The ominously named Hostilius veers sharply into the lane of his fellow Green, Achilles, cutting him off from an attempt at breaking into the front line, which remains firmly in the hands of the Whites!

This is proving to be a steady race, dear Quirites. The White charge presses onward through the turn, while the Greens follow closely. Only Galen lags slightly behind from the pack. Chrysanthos takes full advantage of the turn.

The White line continues to press a united front forward at full speed, but Chrysanthos is unable to keep the pace, his sturdy Venetians foaming from the sustained exertion.

Behind him, the Greens form up a line of their own, ominously bearing down on the exposed Chrysanthos. The Green charge moves through the turn with military-like care and precision.

At the same time, Galen unexpectedly picks up speed. He deftly rounds the metae, his chariot wheels daringly close to the towering pillars. He reaches out a hand, and brushes his fingers across their bronze surface, with a smug smile for the crowd. White supporters jeer at the arrogance, while the Green fans roar with approval!

This has been a steady race.

The White team continues forward in unison, leaving Chrysanthos to his fate. Whether by chance or design, however, the Green line mirrors the White formation: Hostilius falling slightly back from his peers as they continue to charge at the heels of the Albati.

Another turn is soon in store for the White front, however, which always promises to throw off even the steadiest of chariots ...

A cautious round in general.

The White front continues smoothly and carefully through their turn. Ambrosius clearly handles his reins the best, but in the outside lane that doesn't count for much. Chrysanthos is keeping pace with his teammates, but still hasn't managed to recover from his lapse back on the second stretch.

Achilles and Galen tighten up as they continue to chase down the elusive Albati. With Chrysanthos lagging behind his peers, he looks like an easy target for whatever the two Greens might be planning. As for Hostilius and Ventus, they continue to head up the rear—no surprise perhaps for the slower chariots in today's lineup.

Most of the chariots have now rounded the second turn, but little has changed on the track. The Whites continue to hold their front line, while the Greens cling closely to their heels. Only Hostilius struggles to keep up with the pack.

Achilles handles the turn with the most skill, navigating a careful course between Galen and Ventus.

Meanwhile, Galen attempts to overtake the trailing Chrysanthos, but the determined Albatus will have none of it! He forcefully spurs ahead, leaving the ambitious Green charging too fast through the turn. Galen's horses falter, and crash, much to the dismay of Prasina's supporters in the stands.

P. S. Galen, please tell me your damage assignments when you send in your next action.

The White charge proceeds unhindered into the first turn of this second lap—though everyone is quite spread out across the track. Galen attempts to speed ahead of Chrysanthos' trailing chariot, and nearly succeeds, but the Green auriga still hasn't quite recovered his nerve since the loss of his mare and loses his edge on Chrysanthos.

Only Achilles is able to keep pace with the gleaming line of Albati, bearing down with everything his chariot has to offer. Galen may have fallen behind, but out of the corner of his eye, Chrysanthos can still see Achilles looming on his right.

Ventus cautiously completes his turn in the outer lane, but behind him, one of Hostilius' stallions fails to navigate the corpse of Zephyrus, jarring the chariot and felling the heavy-footed horse. White fans jeer gleefully at the Green's continued misfortune.

The indomitable charge of the Albati has fallen apart! First, Ambrosius, the fastest of the Whites in this race, unexpectedly falls behind his teammates while making too careful a turn in the outside lane. On the opposite side of the line, however, Cyrus crashes headlong into the metae! Thankfully he's got many hardy Venetians on his team to take such a devastating hit. Only Artemon emerges from the turn unscathed, and in position, though Chrysanthos takes command of the turn!

The Greens in the rear hold formation, except for Achilles who is jostled by the approaching turn, but appears to have nevertheless weathered the maneuver.

Where once they moved with grace and uniformity, the Whites are now scrambling to hold their lead. Galen pulls ahead to join his fellow Prasinus, Achilles, as they charge the lagging Whites in a double-headed charge. Galen's command of the reins earns him some appreciative cheers from the Green fans.

Meanwhile, in the outside lane, Ventus leisurely enters the turn, with Hostilius soon to follow.
