CIRCENSES: Race A

Postby Lucius Livius Seneca » Sat Sep 09, 2017 8:46 am

L. Livius prae. circ. omnibus in Circo sal.

The first of our qualifying races is off to a diverse start, with all three factiones represented on the front line. Only Kostas trails behind, though seemingly by design. What does this wily Green have planned?

All chariots have twelve (12) hours to submit their desired action to the praepositus circensis as they move into the second leg of this lap. Those who do not meet this deadline will be considered to have chosen "Steady."

Push his fillies hard with a sneaky turn pulls the lone Venetus, Petrus to the front! He's approaching the metae fast now ... hopefully not too fast!

Archippos surges ahead lining him up neck-to-neck with Petrus, and stealing the inside lane for a boost of speed! The Greens and Eonus ride steady as all three chariots approach the turn.

Despite having the inside turn stolen from him by Archippos, Petrus continues to charge ahead unabated. Archippos now tries to cut ahead of the lone Blue, but Petrus is simply too fast. With both chariots fielding nothing but Asturcones, this will be a contest of pure speed between these two.

The Greens sense their opportunity to surge ahead as they see Archippos begin to maneuver against Petrus. The White's failure however, leaves the two Prasini stuck in place. Despite the lack of space, Kostas nevertheless grabs a firm hold of his reigns and guides his horses through the turn for an extra boost of speed, Elenios and Herodes proving invaluable for their steady pace and calm demeanor.

Archippos lashes his team of fillies for everything they've got to give, finally pulling up alongside Petrus. The two race neck-and-neck ahead of everyone else at breakneck speed.

Behind them, Kostas suddenly charges his chariot between Makarios and Eonus, driving an unexpected wedge between the two. Eonus has no choice but to fall back or be driven into the outside wall. He reluctantly yanks on the reins with a curse. The two Greens share a triumphant grin as they pull up alongside one another, leaving the disgruntled White in their wake.

Petrus and Archippus continue to keep pace with one another. As they enter the next turn, however, the two Asturian chariots neatly diverge. They want as much space as they can afford around the dangerous bronze metae, even if it means giving up some inside advantage.

Meanwhile, Makarios takes command of the rear, spurring ahead of Kostas and Eonus.

Archippos is now gaining ground on Petrus, though both continue to outpace the other chariots. We can no doubt expect much back-and-forth between these two Asturian champions.

The two Greens, Kostas and Makarios, hold true through the turn, with Kostas once again demonstrating his skill with the reins. Only the languid Eonus now is left to round the metae.

Petrus continues to slide behind Archippos, much to the delight of the leading Albatus and his fans, and Petrus soon finds himself surrounded by the Greens as they approach him from behind. Kostas, especially, is driving his chariot hard to keep up with his teammate, Makarios. The two Prasini continue their gradual ascent towards the front of the race.

With no other chariots to worry about, lonely Eonus navigates the metae with ease, picking up some much needed speed in the second turn.

If Petrus was confounded before by his slip behind Archippos, he must be truly bewildered now! Out of nowhere, wily Kostas outmaneuvers the lone Prasinus, forcing him even further behind the ranks, while the dexterous Green advances to third place, just behind his teammate Makarios.

Far ahead, Archippos suffers the first crash of this race—and a fairly serious one at that! His Asturcones rush a little too eagerly around the bend, and the Albatus loses control of the reins with a sickening collision. Green and Blue fans mercilessly cheer the White carnage.

The tides continue to turn in favor of the Greens. Archippos and Petrus carry on as before, but Kostas and Makarios are slowly gaining ground during this second lap. Kostas deftly rounds the outer lane, bringing him up alongside his teammate as they bear down on the limping White ahead of them. It would seem that crash has dampened some of the spirit we saw earlier in Archippos and his team.

Petrus, on the other hand, is the next to face the turn, though from the relative safety of the third lane. Eonus continues to trail, now well past the linea alba.
