I. General History

The gens Flavia was a plebeian family at Rome. Its members are first mentioned during the last three centuries of the Republic. The first of the Flavii to achieve prominence was Marcus Flavius, Tribune of the plebs in 327 and 323 BC; however, no Flavius attained the consulship until Gaius Flavius Fimbria in 104 BC. The gens became illustrious during the first century AD, when the family of the Flavii Sabini claimed the imperial dignity.
Under the Empire, the number of persons bearing this nomen becomes very large, perhaps due to the great number of freedmen under the Flavian dynasty of emperors. It was a common practice for freedmen to assume the nomina of their patrons, and so countless persons who obtained the Roman franchise under the Flavian emperors adopted the name Flavius, which was then handed down to their descendants.
During the later period of the Empire, the name Flavius frequently descended from one emperor to another, beginning with Constantius, the father of Constantine the Great. The name became so ubiquitous that it was sometimes treated as a praenomen, to the extent of being regularly abbreviated Fl., and it is even described as a praenomen in some sources, although it was never truly used as a personal name. The last emperor to take the name was eastern emperor Constantine IV (654 BC).

II. Origin

The Flavii seem to have been of Sabine origin, and may have been connected with the Flavii who lived at Reate during the first century AD, and to whom the emperor Vespasian belonged. But the name Flavius also occurs in other countries of Italy, as Etruria and Lucania. The name is derived from flavus, meaning "golden" or "golden-brown", and probably referred to the blond hair possessed by an early member of the family. Flavus was also a surname found in a number of gentes.
In modern use, Flavius is a personal name, and widely used in romance languages, including Italian and Spanish Flavio (fem. Flavia), French Flavien (fem. Flavie), Portuguese Flávio (fem. Flávia), and Romanian Flavius or Flaviu (fem. Flavia).

III. Praenomina used

The early Flavii used the praenomina Marcus, Quintus, Gaius, and Lucius. Of these, Gaius is the only one known from the family of the Fimbriae. The name Gnaeus occurs once, but as the son of a freedman of the family, and thus does not seem to be representative of the gens. The Flavii Sabini appear to have restricted themselves to the praenomen Titus alone, and distinguished their sons by the use of different surnames, usually by giving the younger sons surnames derived from their maternal ancestors.

V. Flavii and Res Publica

The Gens Flavia has no equal in the Republic. We are truly the largest, cohesive, significant and powerful Gens of the Republic.

The colours of the Gens Flavia are red and golden.

The Flavia family has its own expression in all spheres of the Republic:

1) Factio Russata - This is an expression of our cultural component, in a broad sense. Through this team, our Gens takes part in the cultural life of the Republic, participates in various events and competitions, and also provides support to other representatives of our Gens. In addition, like in ancient Rome, we use this Factio as a political club that expresses the political will of our clan.
2) Cultus Mithrae - A significant part of our Gens are adherents of the Cult of Mithras, for this reason, this religious collegium is an expression of the sacred component of our Gens.
3) Provincia Sarmatia - This is the territorial expression of our Gens. Flavii are the overwhelming majority of the inhabitants of the province. Even if you are far beyond Sarmatia, you can always start a career and try yourself as a provincial official, realize here some of your ideas and projects, because Sarmatia is the Province of the Flavii. Sarmatia is the largest, strongest and best province in the Republic.
4) Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis - This expression of our Gens in the field of historical reenactment. This is our legion. In the Gens Flavia a large number of reenactors and people are well versed in the history of ancient Rome. So if you are fond of historical reconstruction, welcome, Flavia will always help you in this.

Interesting facts about the Flavii:

1) Flavia is the largest family in the Roman Republic (We left behind such numerous Gens as Octavia or Aurelia);
2) Our Gens is 5% of the total population of the Republic (one of every 20 citizens is a member of our family);
3) 2 families of our Gens are patrician and are the founders of the Republic (10% of all patricians of the Republic belong to our Gens);
4) The first Censor, Consul and Curul Aedile were members of the Gens Flavia;
5) 30% of the Senators are Flavii;
6) The first winner of the Ludi Rei Publicae was a member of the Gens Flavia;

No other Gens in the Republic has such achievements, influence and authority. No other Gens has such a strong and expressed representation in so many areas of the Republic.

The The Gens Flavia is by right the best of the best.
