LUDI FLORALES II

Tomorrow is the first day of Florales, which runs from April 28th – May 3rd.

The Floralia is the festival of the Goddess Flora, patron of flowers and spring. It begins with theatrical performances and climaxes with full-blown Games, and is under the purview of the plebeian aediles. The Floralia lasts for six days. In later days prostitutes claimed the Goddess Flora as their patron and celebrated the Floralia with gusto. Hares and goats are let loose in the Circus prior to the games (both notorious symbols of fertility, and especially associated with cultivated vegetation, as opposed to wild woodlands). Beans and lupins were thrown to the crowds at the Floralia, again symbols of fertility, and clothing of wild colors was worn.

The rite will be performed by Lucius Aurelius Curio

Literary Contest:

Write a tale (story) with Goddess Flora, Floraria and Spring as main theme (related or about).

Submit an entry by posting here: Or by sending me a personal message.

All entries must be received until May 3rd

The prize will be a coin 1:1 replica of this famous coin produced by Marcus Brutus during the civil war after the assassination of Caesar. Sponsored by Publius Iunius Brutus

The contest is open to anyone.

Flora

Oh sweet goddess of the spring,
how good of you or' my garden loom

to plant the young shoots
that will be the summer bloom

with your multi-colored maidens
to urge the sap to rise to every branch

my joy in this complete would be
were I not deprived my signet lance

please, dear lady, when you're done
that red stick which as auger used

to its rightful place return
that a thief my garden may not abuse.

Priapus

With the joy of spring!

L. Livius O. Aurelio pleb. aed. omnibusque Quiritibus in Foro sal.

Gratias multas ago! I am honoured by the Aedilitas. This year's Floralia was an opportunity for me to greatly deepen my appreciation for the significance of Flora's all to easily overlooked numen.

In the same floral spirit, this weekend I paid a visit to a large garden nursery and came across this stunning Jollies Nantes cultivar of fuchsia. I took one home, and have since dubbed it my flos imperialis for reasons which are hopefully apparent.
