LUDI CEREALES II

Postby Octavius Aurelius Augustus » Wed Apr 12, 2017 3:46 pm

Today is the first day of Ludi Cereales which runs from April 12-19th in honor of Ceres.

In antiquity, during this celebration of Ceres, Virgil says, 'when the clear spring has come let all your country folk worship Ceres' and offer milk, honey and wine, and for good luck carry the luck-bringing sacrificial victim three times round the young crops. We know nothing of the ceremonies in her temple, but at the Games white robes were worn. Here the most striking cult act was performed: foxes, with burning brands tied to their tails, were let loose in the Circus Maximus. Ovid's explanation is complicated by a textual corruption, but he suggests that a fox was ritually burnt, perhaps as a warning to other vermin to keep away. On 19 April, plebeian families could exchange hospitality and dine together as the patricians had done at the end of the Megalesia.

The rite will be performed by Gaia Cassia Longina

I propose one thing, if you permit, and if Gods permit us
If I am alone in "competing" for Ludi, I will leave the gift for the sole benefit of the Republic, for I think that it is much more deserving of winning a present when there are several participants.
what do you think ?

Curio Sal.

Here is one of my entries, visually representing the burning of a fox that traditionally occurred on Cerialia.

The statue of Ceres is now in the mail to Consul Curio.
