Salve comrades. I registered as Tiberia Salvia Albina because there was no cognomen "Alba", but "Alba" is my roman cognomen for many years, from Nova Roma, seven years I think. Can Censores change my cognomen "Albina" to "Alba"?

Brutus Cen Sal.

Our current policy is to only approve cognomen which we have evidence of use between 700s BCE and 350 CE. If you provide such a reference the cognomen can be happily changed.

Salvete omnes!

Some of us are from Nova Roma, and majority (and its needed) wants the same name as in Nova Roma.
In my opinion this should be respected. I am asking for inclusion of cognomen "Palla".

Here can be a proof of use this cognomen:

https://books.google.cz/books?id=-d3hFC_nAEAC&pg=PA68&lpg=PA68&dq=cognomen%20palla&source=bl&ots=RF1tFzZJIS&sig=oKLZzo_MB819epSuTyohp05bJHY&hl=cs&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiJhaqmjtXVAhWiNpoKHUiKAScQ6AEIJTAA#v=onepage&q=cognomen%20palla&f=false

Valete bene!

Sal.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention Nerva.

I understand the desire to reconcile NR names with the new reality here in the Respublica. I too had a different name in NR.

This said the nomenclature in NR left some to be desired. By enforcing a standard of names being historical between the founding of Rome to 350CE we are ensuring that 10 years from now we preserve the tradition of our ancestors basic naming system. If we don't follow a standard then why not just allow any name or use Russian, Czech, or English names? The point behind the name was as a form of Roman cultural expression.

The good news is that almost all names that have been requested are historical but just not in the system. We can easily add such names. We added many names from many historical sources when designing the system. But we certainly do not have all. We are only human and have limited time to research this important and interesting topic. For this, our citizens can help with our research. A good source for cognomina research is "A study of the cognomina of soldiers in the Roman legions" by Dean, Lindley Richard.
