Imagines Maiorum - The Roman Death Mask

Salvete Omnes!

Not sure if this topic already has a thread but I thought I would add a couple of interesting sources of information on the Imagines Maiorum or Roman Death Mask. When I first learned about this tradition at university I was immediately captivated by it and wanted to recreate it. I would love to do face castings for living people (I do not want to speak of anyone's death!) so that we may preserve our images at different stages of life.

Here are two sources I found online. One is a book called "Ancestor Masks and Aristocratic Power in Roman Culture." I have the link for Google books but of course the free Google book online is incomplete. Looks worth buying though!

The second link is for a PDF file from the University of Pennsylvania. The file is a brief article on the experiment to recreate the method of Ancient Roman wax mask casting by the university. I find it very interesting and inspiring as I am sure all of you will as well!
