Turret 18a (Wallhouses East) This is a eight man turret. The turrets were placed evenly between mile-castles two to each space on the wall. These stone towers were constructed as an integeral part of Hadrian's wall. A simple ladder, mounted on six stone steps was used to access the upper floor of the turret. The space provided a sleeping area for the eight men assigned here as well as access to the top of the wall. This temporarygarrison duty provided an openfire pit for heat and cooking. the style of the roof design is speculative.
