Epictetus: The Stoic "Handbook"

Salvete!

Since Stoicism seems to be the main interest of the group, here is one of the most famous works in Stoicism. It is Epictetus' "handbook" of Stoic philosophy. You may find a really good version here:
http://classics.mit.edu/Epictetus/epicench.html

So, from this, he gives a lot of attention to some of the topics we have discusses (for example, how to control your anger).

What are your favorite passages from this? Does anything speak to you? My favorite is:

If you have an earnest desire of attaining to philosophy, prepare yourself from the very first to be laughed at, to be sneered by the multitude, to hear them say,." He is returned to us a philosopher all at once," and " Whence this supercilious look?" Now, for your part, don't have a supercilious look indeed; but keep steadily to those things which appear best to you as one appointed by God to this station. For remember that, if you adhere to the same point, those very persons who at first ridiculed will afterwards admire you. But if you are conquered by them, you will incur a double ridicule (22).

I am also in the process of writing a interactive philosophy book on ancient philosophy focusing on Stoicism, Platonic, Epicurean, and more spiritual thought. I am attempting to bring philosophy back into popular culture. Yoga practices and Buddhism are becoming more popular, why not try ancient traditions? I'll post sections for you to print out and work on over the months and look forward to your feedback.

I hope your summers are going well!

Salve Cassia Longina!
Bringing classic European traditions back into popular culture - now that sounds interesting! Western civilization is currently in an identity crisis. Maybe it is just the right time for another "renaissance".
I can already imagine a modern Academy offering courses in philosophy in a similar way as Buddhists or the esotherics and the New Age movement do. It would be great to have these courses offered in Athens or Rome with people from all over the world coming to the ancient origins of European culture to revive them.
Vale!

Salvete!

Very interesting, Tusce! I'll have to look into those groups!

Here are some other books that are very good for Stoicism:

Seneca
Six Tragedies
On the Shortness of Life

Cicero
On Living and Dying Well
The Republic and the Laws (an interesting look at how the Stoic philosophy was incorporated into law)
On Obligations
Orator: Brutus

Plutarch
Lives (different chapters relay different messages, but take a look at "Brutus" and "Dion")

You can even find little pockets of Stoicism in Ovid and Horace!
